Created in the 19th century in a superb black marble decorated with very thin and sparse white veins, this Napoleon III style fireplace is a rare and beautiful piece!
The lintel, surmounted by a thin molded shelf, is nicely decorated with patterns of geometric motifs: a diamond highlighted by a rectangular cartouche sculpted in relief. It rests on a pair of straight jambs with finger flutes topped by modillions carved by hand. These jambs are delimited at the bottom by a foot block and at the top by a molded narrow piece. At the top of the jambs, we will note another geometric motif, a square in relief.
All these hand-sculpted motifs are characteristic of the Napoleon III fireplace Style: sumptuous, exuberant shapes, profusion of decorative motifs and eclecticism. These decorative elements are inspired in fact by the Antiquity, the Ancien Régime, the Renaissance, the Louis XVI style ...
