19th century antique black and white marble mantle
This pretty little antique mantle was carved and hand-sculpted in the middle of the 19th century in a white marble with slight black veins. This Pompadour style mantle is inspired by the sinuous lines of the Louis XV style.
At the time, these Pompadour mantles were mainly made to outfit the new Haussmannian apartments.
This antique mantle is characterized by a curved lintel, a thin molded shelf with a beautiful movement, and, on the lintel, a torus (circle) highlighted by beautiful finely hand-carved oblong moldings. The jambs feature moldings on the outside giving an impression of depth. The central motif inscribed on the tablet can also be found along the canted jambs and at the top of them. They rest on foot blocks.
