Pompadour style white marble mantle

This lovely little, 19th century - Pompadour style - antique white marble mantel features beautiful black veins

The Pompadour style mantles are inspired by the sinuous lines of the Louis XV style. They were made from the middle of the 19th century to furnish Haussmannian apartments. They are characterized by slightly curved lintel and shelf and by a lintel centered by a torus (circle) framed by finely hand-carved oblong moldings.

Here, the jambs feature moldings on the outside giving an impression of depth to the whole piece. The central motif inscribed on the lintel appears also along the curved jambs and at the top of them. The tablet is thin and offers a beautiful movement.
