Cast iron fire back: mythological scene

This antique cast iron chimney back is perfectly square. It features a beautiful mythological scene: Hercules spinning at Omphale’s feet, (queen of Lydia).

Hercules, disguised as a woman, was sold as a slave to Omphale by Mercury (the God of Trade). Omphale and Hercules fall in love and had a son, the first King of Lydia, founder of the Heraclid dynasty.

This fire back dates back to the end of the 18th century. It was made in France and remains in good condition.
