Pair of 17th century antique wrought iron andirons

This beautiful pair of antique andirons is made of wrought iron. The horizontal bar is oblique. These andirons are double-sided, one of which is decorated with spit hooks along the shaft for a spindle holder. They rest on a simple base and are topped by wrought iron cresset tops.

These large andirons used to be found in kitchen fireplaces. They were used, like all andirons, to support logs and to ventilate the fire, but also to hold roasting pins and to keep food warm in small cresset tops.
