Wonderful pair of antique andirons with wrought iron cresset-tops.

This exceptional pair of antique wrought iron andirons is quite high. They are double-sided, one of which is forged with spindle hooks. They rest on a double base and are topped by wrought iron cresset-tops.

In fact, andirons are large fire-dogs that were once used in large kitchen fireplaces. They were used to support logs and ventilate the fire, but also to support roasting pins. The little baskets at the top (called the "cresset-top") kept the food warm by the heat of the charcoal.

Origin: France

Period: 17th century

Condition: slightly eroded, the wrought iron features a beautiful natural patina.
