Cast iron fire back from the 18th century: Allegory of Trade

This wonderful antique cast iron fireback dates back to the end of the 18th century. Made in France by a master blacksmith of the 18th century, it depicts a central Roman mythological scene with the Allegory of Trade.

This fire back is centered by Mercury, the Roman God of Trade, thieves and travels. He holds one of his main attributes in his left hand: the caduceus. This scene takes place in a port of ancient Rome. The sailboats are docked and the men are busy disembarking and transporting the goods.
