Louis XIII style antique fireplace with trumeau

This Louis XIII style (1608 -1630) antique fireplace was salvaged in a mansion house situated in the city of Beauné. It is made of Jaumont stone.

This fireplace is very original and uncommon even if its wide hearth opening is a very characteristic feature of this period.

The small trumeau is centered with an embossed breastplate with thin floral sculptures on the upper corners and foliage on the lower corners. It is beautifully topped by a molded cornice.

The console-shaped jambs are thin and slender. Those fluted jambs sit on foot blocks. The integral shelf (lintel) has a flat molding running along its lower edge. It is also decorated with the various sculptures we also find on the jambs and the trumeau.

  • The “Pierre de Jaumont” stone is also called “pierre de soleil” (“sunny stone”). It is a natural calcareous stone quarried in Lorrain region just above abandoned iron mines. Its gold-yellow color comes from iron rust.
