19th Century French fireplace in carved limestone

This antique fireplace was carved from Savonnière stone.

Known as a “potager” or open-hearth cooking fireplace, it reflects the ingenuity and savoir-faire of the stone craftsmen who once worked throughout the French countryside. Dating from the 19th century, its generous height allowed a fire to be lit in the hearth while dishes were cooked above 2 cast-iron stew holes filled with embers.

The fireplace in natural limestone features a pair of monolithic jambs and a streamlined throat carved from a single block. The monolithic lintel still shows traces of a central decorative element, likely a plate.

A beautiful antique piece, ideal to add an authentic rustic, country charm to a home, whether installed indoors or outdoors.
