This beautiful 19th century, Napoleon III style antique mantle was carved out of pink marble from Pyrenees region (a lovely pink marble richly veined with white).
This style could be summed up in one word: Abundance. In general, the Napoleon III style is characterized by the exuberance of forms and the profusion of decorative motifs. This period was also the time of the great transformation of Paris under the impulse of Baron Haussmann. With the proliferation of hausmanian apartments, marble mantles became common pieces of furniture!
The lintel and the thin shelf of this mantle sit on two modillions with scrolls. The jambs are straight. The whole piece features decorative molded panels
