17th Century stone fireplace with carved trumeau and sculpted cornice
| A beautiful antique fireplace from southwestern France dating to the late 17th century. |
The jambs are narrow at the base and gently swell toward the top, echoing the baluster feet found on period furniture. The monolithic lintel is beautifully hand-carved with intricate patterns (a central rosette and an elongated diamond ending in arrow motifs). Elegant moldings frame the rectangular firebox, highlighting the fireplace’s refined proportions.
The upper section (trumeau and cornice) is unmistakably of Louis XIV style (1661-1715) : monumental and richly detailed, yet not overly heavy, perfectly symmetrical, and adorned with hand-sculpted motifs of Italian and Antique inspiration.
The trumeau features rounded corners and is nicely animated with a molded frame flanked by a pair of colonnades and topped by a sculpted garland.
The opulent cornice offers a beautiful work of sculptures with a succession of fine moldings and rounded corners.
Crafted from white limestone and reclaimed from Charente in southwestern France, this authentic and elegant fireplace will fit easily in any type of interior style.
